The order of the churches in chapters 2 and 3 are important, and it doesn’t work in any other order – church history is reflected in the order of the letters!
- Ephesus – The Apostolic Church
- Smyrna – The Persecuted Church
- Pergamum – The Church married the World
- Thyatira – The Medieval Church
- Sardis – The “Reformed” church
- Philadelphia – The Missionary Church
- Laodicea – The Apostate Church
Think about what that means for today. As pastor and songwriter Steve Camp once pointed out, “We’re livin’ in Laodicea…”
